Taking an
Adaptive Community Leadership Approach
Understanding systems that impact people is a critical aspect of the work that we do at Roots of Inclusion. Every system is perfectly aligned to produce its current outcomes.
Taking time to develop an understanding of the people, relationships, rules and structures in any system that support the status quo, will help us make changes that will move toward equity and inclusion.

SEL for Washington is a grassroots effort and growing coalition of members who educate about and advocate for access to Social and Emotional Learning and skill development in Washington public schools. Along with other education advocates and organizations, we endeavor to provide insight and guidance for policy makers, educators and parents to more fully understand the importance of teaching and developing SEL skills for today’s students.

Washington State Family Engagement Center

Roots of Inclusion works in partnership with Education Northwest to support the creation of a Statewide Family Engagement Center in Washington state through a grant by the U.S. Department of Education.
The grant funds a collaboration between Education Northwest, the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the Community Center for Education Results (CCER), Roots of Inclusion, and Washington Family Engagement. The center will be led by Education Northwest and the partnership will ensure that the work fully aligns with emerging family engagement policy and infrastructure.
The center will play a critical role in ensuring that families and educators share a voice in students’ well-being and achievement. It comes at a critical moment for public education, as schools and districts across the country look to drive academic recovery and address students’ developmental needs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Washington Statewide Family Engagement Center will bring increased resources, technical assistance, and a strict focus on building, repairing, and nurturing meaningful partnerships with families.

About the IPTN
Inclusion is the belief and practice that all students have the right to meaningfully access academic and social opportunities in general education settings. According to the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), in Washington State, only 57 percent of students receiving special education services are included in general education settings for 80-100% of the school day. Washington is currently one of the least inclusive states, ranking 44 out of 50.
To help improve our schools’ ability to be more inclusive, the Washington State Legislature provided OSPI with $25,000,000, through the 2019-21 Biennial Budget, to implement professional development in support of inclusionary practices over two years, with an emphasis on coaching and mentoring.
Roots of Inclusion has partnered with PAVE, Open Doors for Multicultural Families and Education Northwest to form the Inclusionary Practices Family Engagement Collaborative, commonly called the FEC. The FEC is a member of a cadre of organizations working on the Inclusionary Practices Professional Development Project. The FEC's role is directly related to the parent and family engagement aspects of the project.
