Our Work with Community

Roots of Inclusion’s leadership is grounded in responsiveness to community wisdom and a commitment to challenging the status quo. Drawing on their executive training in Adaptive Community Leadership, ROI’s leaders engage communities and institutions in navigating complex change, examining how roles, norms, and structures must shift to create more just systems.

In critically examining their own experiences as non-disabled individuals, ROI’s leaders are committed to following the wisdom of disabled people, building trust through transparency, and ensuring that disabled voices guide the work—not institutional agendas. Responsive listening shapes how ROI builds relationships, repairs harm, and shifts how systems show up for disabled people and their communities.

Our Work: Turning Values into Action

Guided by these values, ROI's work focuses on building capacity, relationships, and systemic change. ROI supports communities through tools, coaching, and co-created learning experiences that advance disability justice and educational equity.  This work is done in collaboration with families, educators, and advocates to transform systems—advancing inclusion, equity, and meaningful engagement in education and beyond.

Inclusionary Practices Technical Assistance Network (IPTN)

Through ROI's role in the Family Engagement Collaborative (FEC)—a partner organization within the Inclusionary Practices Technical Assistance Network (IPTN)—we work to ensure that students with disabilities can fully participate in both academic and social aspects of general education. In collaboration with Education Northwest, PAVE, and The Arc of King County, we focus on strengthening family-school partnerships and helping schools make inclusion a lived practice, not just a policy.

Roots of Inclusion is proud to be a core partner in the Washington Statewide Family Engagement Center, a project led by Education Northwest and funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

This collaborative effort aims to build, repair, and sustain meaningful partnerships between families and schools across the state—especially as education systems respond to the ongoing impact of COVID-19. We help ensure the center’s work reflects family voice, equity-centered practices, and real-life needs.

SEL for Washington

Expanding Access to Social and Emotional Learning

SEL for Washington is a grassroots initiative and coalition advocating for all students in Washington to have access to social and emotional learning (SEL). Together with educators, parents, and policy partners, we raise awareness about the value of SEL and provide insight to help shape inclusive, student-centered policies and practices in public schools.
